An estimated 1,000 urban leaders gathered in Milwaukee for the Center of Community Progress’ Reclaiming Vacant Properties event at the Wisconsin Conference Center. This only conference of its kind was filled with nonprofits, government, business, and community organizations, and professional disciplines all sharing their expert knowledge!
Travis joined an expert panel discussion titled Tossing Out “Take, Make and Waste”: Domicology, Deconstruction, and Design for Disassembly, where he spoke about Milwaukee’s deconstruction ordinance and WasteCap’s local efforts. Other panelists included Rex LaMore, director of Michigan State Center for Community and Economic Development, George Berghorn, assistant professor at Michigan State School of Planning, Design and Construction and, Michael Mack, owner of Mack Properties.
Kevin led two mobile workshop tours during the RVP event. The sold out tours started at Schlitz and Pabst Breweries to learn how their complexes became leading campuses here in Milwaukee. The tour ended at WasteCap to show off the warehouse and all its vast assortment of reclaimed building material.
In addition, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) transformed the banquet room with centerpieces made from wares found at WasteCap’s Architectural Salvage store. They took almost all of the Milwaukee address numbers to give the space a super cool salvage look!
After 3 days of the RVP event, we turned around and went straight to the Daily Reporter’s Top Projects event at Potawatomi! The Daily Reporter honored those in construction “whose projects met and exceeded expectations in 2017.”
